Safe Zone Training is a 1-3 Hour training that uses a combination of hands on activities, lecture and question/answer time, which aims to give folks a better understanding of LGBTQ+ Identities that we then hope they can apply in their personal and professional lives. This training is great for anyone who has LGBTQ+ family, friends or co-workers that they want to understand and connect more with, as well as professionals who want to provide their services in the best way possible for each individual.
Why should I attend Safe Zone Training?
LGBTQ+ folks sometimes question whether they will feel safe, welcomed, or supported in a new environment. Displaying Safe Zone stickers and demonstrating you went to a training can communicate to others the commitment you’re making to creating LGBTQ-inclusive environments.
Another reason is for people to explore, for themselves, the concepts of sexuality and gender. This goes for people who are L, G, B, T, and/or Q, as well as people who aren’t (straight and/or cisgender people).
We don’t get a lot of space in society to talk about these things, and Safe Zone trainings unique and wonderful because they’re exactly that. A safe place to ask questions, to be vulnerable, and to learn.
There is a pressure to already know how to be LGBTQ+ inclusive. And while many of us want to be we don’t necessarily feel comfortable with the language, with our own level of understanding, and don’t know where to go to learn more. Safe Zone trainings are safe places for people can go to learn more, about their own gender/sexuality and deepen their understanding of LGBTQ+ identity and issues.
What We Offer
We currently offer three Safe Zone Training options. Please read the descriptions below to see what one best fits your group. We are always learning and growing ourselves and you can expect this program to grow as well!
-
This is the standard Safe Zone Training, 2 hours with a 15 minute break. It covers all the information needed along with group activities to provide a deeper understanding of the information. This training happens monthly at The Center but you can request the training at your facility.
-
Same basic information with the group activities removed for efficiency. This training is great for large scale groups who need the basic information without the extras.
-
This “bare bones” training is taught lecture style and aims to give the group a basic understanding of Safe Zone Training. This is great for classrooms, workplace or other small groups that need to know the basics but may not have the time or ability to commit to 2 Hours. This can be ran with the full hour of lecture or a 45 minute lecture with 15 minutes for questions.
